Fountain of Youth Part 2 (Life Participation)

The other day one of my clients reminded me of a quote I had said, which, I believe is one of the best reasons for committing to a healthy lifestyle, and what is this awe-inspiring quote ūüėČ you ask?

” I workout so I can participate in life, not sit on the sidelines”.

I am completely floored by the sheer number of people who have literally given up on participating in life. Honestly, I can’t even comprehend how many people are happy just being spectators in this “game” of life! These life spectators spend more of their precious time in the “virtual world” ¬†than they do the real world, getting lost for many hours a day playing video games or watching Honey Boo Boo marathons!

I am also amazed at how many people can’t perform simple fitness/survival tasks that any “normal” human should be able to do, such as running at least a mile without stopping, hiking multiple miles, lifting/carrying more than 50-lbs, or jumping up and pulling themselves up and over a ledge. If you can’t perform these task you should ask yourself, how can I protect my family/loved ones when I can’t even take care of myself?

Where did this lack of life participation come from? Why are so many people very content with just watching life go by? Because it is easier to sit, watch, and judge others.¬†But seriously, think about it, “sideline sitters” do nothing but eat processed, sugary, nutrient deficient food that makes them sick and overweight. If that was not bad enough they also refuse to exercise, which makes them fumbling, stumbling, uncoordinated “humans” that would not last one day of the¬†zombie apocalypse.

Will you be ready?

Will you be ready?

It is funny because I can never talk about this subject without it turning in to surviving the zombie apocalypse or joining the human resistance in the fight against the machines :). Either way if the shit hits the fan and the lights go out for good, I bet you will wish your were a little stronger, a little faster, and a whole lot healthier. But I don’t want this post to be all doom and gloom so lets assume the zombie apocalypse is still many years away (fingers crossed). So why workout and be healthy? So we can have¬†FUN,¬†enjoying and living life to the fullest. Let’s never forget that life is extremely short and even more precious and it should be your duty to live each and everyday to the¬†fullest! The only way to get the most out of life is to have a strong body and an even stronger mind and yes they are related. Your mind will never reach its full potential if your body is broken! Ever notice that the¬†minds¬†of people who feed/treat their body like a garbage-can, aren’t all that hungry for knowledge/life experiences?¬†If you are happy with the way things are going than keep doing what you are doing, but if you are dying for a better life you must first change the way you eat and change your thoughts about exercise. Exercise must become a way of life if you want a better life.

Get busy moving or get busy dying!

Get busy moving or get busy dying!

What is participating in life?

  • Getting out and playing in nature – This could be skiing, hiking, biking, pick up basketball, etc.
  • Playing in an adult sports league
  • Playing with and actually keeping up with your kids
  • Taking an¬†active¬†vacation where you learn a new skill (or improve on an old skill) as opposed to laying on the beach for 7-days just eating, and drinking.
  • Learning a new skill- just know the difference between learning a new skill and being a¬†Groupon groupie¬†ūüėČ
  • Traveling the world and actually experiencing culture as opposed to staying on a cruise ship for fat Americans

There is no tomorrow

Do you see the common words in these life participating ideas? Yes¬†playing¬†and¬†learning! And I don’t mean playing video games or fantasy football. Playing is for adults too and we are never too old to learn! So the first step to participating in life is to establish a good general fitness base. We are much stronger and much more capable than you can imagine but you¬†have¬†to work for it and you¬†must¬†believe in your abilities! So let’s enjoy life today, not tomorrow. We are always putting¬†things/goals off until tomorrow. If you want it, do it, stop waiting till the time is right, that is just another excuse. As my man Apollo Creed says, “There is no tomorrow”!

10-Week Challenge Tanya Faley

Again we need to take photos from the same spot but as you can see Tanya's progress has been phenomenal since joining CKO!

Again we need to take photos from the same spot (hindsight is 20/20) but as you can see Tanya’s progress has been phenomenal since joining CKO! During the 10-week challenge Tanya lost 14-lbs and 4.5-inches off her waist!

We asked the participants¬†(optional) of the 10-week challenge if they wanted to share their own results/personal success story and below is Tanya Faley’s results/story of not only her CKO 10-week challenge experience but her fitness journey over the last 10-years. Tanya started at CKO Seattle on day 1 (July 7, 2012) and her transformation over the 5-months at CKO is outstanding!

Tanya’s Story below:

After my kids were born, I had a hard time losing the weight my back to back pregnancies brought. In 2002, I joined a gym and started a kickboxing class. I attended this class for 2 years and in addition to eating better, dropped 35 pounds and felt the best I ever had. Then, in 2004, a car accident, a move to another town and a full time sit down job caused my weight to climb again. It was a few years before I could exercise fully again due to the car accident and by that time, I had gained so much weight, I didn’t feel like trying to lose it. In 2008, we moved to Shoreline and I was at my heaviest. In 2009, some friends at work talked me into running with them and through that training and a radical eating plan ( The Fat Flush diet), I lost 15 pounds in 2 months. Over the next few years, I kept running and competing in races, but was not watching what I was eating and my weight crept back up. My running was taking more effort for lackluster results and I was getting injured more than I was healthy. In the spring of 2012, I heard about CKO Kickboxing and that a gym was going to open in Shoreline. I had not been able to find a kickboxing program that fit into my schedule, was cost effective and would be rewarding for me to attend, so I was excited to see to try this new place. I tried CKO and I was transported back to 2002 when I fell in love with true cardio kickboxing and the results it gave me (for the effort I put in). I couldn’t be happier with my decision to join CKO!

I participated in the 10 week challenge at CKO that just ended. In that 10 weeks, I lost 14 lbs, took 4 1/2 inches off my waist and I feel great! I have more energy, I am stronger and my running has also improved. I recently ran a 1/2 marathon and got a personal record that was 5 minutes faster than my record a year ago. I know this is because of CKO. The classes have increased my endurance and stamina and in the end, I can run faster and longer.

I attached some photos of my journey.

I am not where I need to be as far as health and weight, but CKO is helping me achieve my goals and I look forward to the journey I am on for a happy, healthy lifestyle.

10-Week Challenge Jon “Bacon” Rogers

We asked (optional) the participants of the 10-week challenge if they wanted to share their own results/personal success story and below is Jon Roger’s results/story of the 10-week challenge experience.¬† Those of you that have taken a class with Jon “Bacon” Rogers find that his enthusiasm and energy is contagious! He has become famous for doing push-ups during rest time, his crazy outfits, and mopping up his “crime scene” after each and every class. Jon was a participant in CKO Seattle’s first ever 10-week challenge (Sept 2012) and I can honestly say that he gave 100% every workout.

Cleaning after every class

Cleaning after every class

10-week results

The pictures were not taken at the exact spot which is why the before picture is more of a close-up than the after picture. But what is noticeable is that Jon looks much healthier and much trimmer after the 10-weeks!

Testimonial for the 10 week challenge (By Jon Rogers):

I entered the challenge with a few goals in mind. Garett helped focus my goals in order that I make meaningful progress. The Sunday boot camp classes absolutely rocked my world, but Robin and I truly looked forward to each and every Sunday as an opportunity to get better and push ourselves beyond what we thought was humanly possible. Garett and Jessica both are such motivating forces- they know exactly how to train the human body for maximum results. Their knowledge base of total body workout is unparalleled and we never doubted their resolve to see us reach our best- which we both felt we accomplished. The most beautiful part was how encouraging all of the trainers were throughout the challenge. Ultimately, I experienced life-changing results in terms of both inches lost and physical strength gained. I look forward to future challenges, as I have prioritized personal fitness straight to the top of my life-agenda. I feel good, I look good, and now I have more energy. Thanks CKO- I’m glad you guys are in Seattle.

On a side note- Garett Renon is absolutely the BEST personal trainer in all of the Pacific NW. Albuquerque’s loss is our gain! I highly recommend anyone and every one to give CKO a shot- One week free to try it out and you will be convinced there is no better total body workout in all of Seattle.
