The Health Hazard of Moving

Life is extremely complicated and I have come to the realization that there is still a lot I don’t know or don’t yet understand. But one thing I know for sure is, it is not the situations that define us, it is our reaction to the situation. Because life will not only beat you down, it will show no remorse and continue to kick you while you are down if you let it. Oh, but you just received some bad news? So what! Everybody receives bad news. What are you going to do about that bad news? How you handle the bad news shows your true character. Are you going to stay down, complain, play the victim role, or are you going to stand-up and fight?

Before I go on I would like to make a disclaimer about this post:

I am not a doctor and I am not making any assumptions or diagnoses about anyone’s health in particular. You should always consult with a qualified medical professional, for any medical issues.

With that being said, I just want to point out the sad reality of many people and even many doctors “believing” that movement is somehow bad for their health. Yes you read that right, on occasion I receive a doctor’s note saying person “X” is unable to continue because exercise is “too risky” to person “X’s” overall health. I am not so much mad at the people who go to the doctor as I am about the doctors themselves. You see doctors (not all of them, but a lot) are in the sick people business. If everybody was healthy and everybody was strong, the medical industry would lose millions if not billions of dollars. So instead of wanting truly healthy people, many doctors and pharmaceutical companies love to convince people, that they have a “condition” that can’t be cured but can be made tolerable with a medical “Band-Aid”. Chris Rock said it best, “Doctors don’t cure shit! There ain’t no money in the cure, the money is in the medicine”.

As a result, it has sadly become more acceptable to just give up and take “medicine”. This trend must stop because too many people have lost the urge to fight for better health. Now, don’t get me wrong, I’m not talking about people with serious medical conditions, or even the elderly. I’m talking about people in the prime of their lives, people in their 20’s, 30’s, and 40’s. I am talking about every day people who have chosen to be defined by their minor medial condition. People who have decided to given-up and given-in, despite the possibility of living another 40 to 70 years.

Just to be clear, when I say minor medical conditions,  I am talking about the same conditions that many people already have and will continue to overcome on a regular basis.

But no matter your medical condition, I have absolutely zero interest in playing the “but my disease/injury is worse than your disease/injury game”. This is not a issue about your diagnosis, it is an issue about your reaction to the diagnosis. So here’s the issue, if a doctor tells you that you must stop exercising because it’s hazardous to your health you need to take a long hard look in the mirror and reflect on the choices you have made (maybe even consider a second opinion) and then focus on the solution NOT THE PROBLEM!

There are two things that every health professional and even most medical professionals can agree on and that is; in order to be healthy, one must eat a healthy diet and exercise on a regular basis. There is no one willing to debate this, in fact, one can say it’s a law of nature. So ready for some tough love? Let’s get real, if you are receiving (or even asking for) a note from your doctor recommending that you stop all exercise, you are an unhealthy person. This means you either got dealt a really, really, really bad hand or you made a lot of bad decisions about your health. Ironically many of the same people that flaunt these doctor’s notes are oddly enough, proud of these” disabilities”, it is like their get out of jail free card when it comes to working out. Why? Because we all know it is easier to be the victim then it is to be a hero!

If you believe you are a victim...guess what? You are!

If you believe you are a victim…guess what? You are!

Must I continually remind you, how strong and capable we are? We are the Undisputed Champion of the animal kingdom? Have you already forgot that movement is in our DNA? Then why are so many young people willing to announce defeat before the fight even starts?

Maybe its because many people don’t even know how to be healthy. Well here is a tip, instead of immediately calling your gym and canceling, you should first be a little concerned. The doctor is basically telling you that basic human functions are now hazardous to your health. How do you accept that? Is this even possible? Is there a chance you’re in this predicament because you failed to exercise and eat right in the first place? At the end of the day these are questions for you and you alone to answer. But regardless of how or why you received this doctor’s note, I am challenging you to fight instead of just giving up and giving in. Why don’t you stop accepting what others tell you and instead DEMAND for yourself a better life.

I haven’t completely figured out the blueprint for success yet, but I do know that giving up and quitting will NOT make you successful at LIFE! I know that life is hard and I know that if you want to be better than average, if you actually want to make something of your life, at some point you’re going to have to push through life’s “roadblocks”.

Yes roadblocks! A lot of people think that success is just handed to some people. They like to say things like, “oh you are lucky”, or “it must be nice”, but the reality is successful people get thrown curve balls all the time.  Successful people have stumbles, fumbles, illness, and injuries just like you. But the difference is they do not accept these curve balls, they do not accept failure! The difference is they do not accept the opinions of others. When someone tells them they can’t do something, that fuels their fire, and they want to prove that person wrong. Because that’s just it, the doctor is just giving you his or her opinion. But they aren’t you, they have no idea what you are capable of, you are in charge of your life, not anyone else.

The harder we work the luckier we get

Push through life’s “roadblocks”

And here’s the crazy thing about excuses, I can almost guarantee that someone somewhere has overcame your exact, injury, illness, time constraint, money issue, did I forget any thing?? Well if I did just add your excuses here __________ . All over the world people are walking who were told they will never walk again. All over the world there are people who were told they had 6-months to live and now they are going on year 5. Remember, life is what you make of it, and you have the power to choose whether you fight or whether you give up and become another “victim”. But if you choose to give-up, I don’t care to hear about your “story”. I only surround myself with fighters. I strive to only surround myself with people who will not take no for an answer. Life is too short to deal with weak bitches that look for any excuse to quit as soon as it gets hard.

2 choices: Fight or give-up!

2 choices: Fight or give-up!

But I am however curious about one thing, if you’re not going to fight for your own life. If you are not willing to fight for your own health, I would love to know what it is that you are willing to fight for?! Why do you wake-up every morning? And you can’t say your family, remember the airplane analogy about putting your mask on first?… If you are not strong, if you are not healthy, you are of little help to your family, in fact you are probably a burden. So if not yourself, what are you willing to fight for?

I want to create a call to action! — No more giving-up without a fight. Maybe you can’t beat your injury, maybe you can’t beat your illness but if you don’t try, if you refuse to fight, you will always be the sad “victim” that nobody wants to be around! The time to fight in NOW!!! RISE UP AND TAKE YOUR LIFE BACK!!!
